It’s a common starting point: a homeowner has a rough idea — a patio, maybe a fire pit — and starts by comparing paver colors or looking at drainage-solutions catalog photos. It’s an understandable instinct, but it usually leads to a space that gets built in pieces rather than planned as a whole. We take the opposite approach, and it’s worth explaining why.

Design is where every project actually starts

Whether it’s a single patio or a full yard renovation, we walk the property first and talk through how the space actually gets used now — and how you want to use it. That conversation surfaces things that aren’t obvious from the street: grading and drainage paths, mature trees worth designing around, and how sun exposure shifts through the seasons.

The result is a plan that ties hardscape and softscape together intentionally. A patio, a retaining wall, and the planting bed next to it should read as one composition — not three unrelated purchases finished at different times by whoever happened to be available.

What a design-first approach actually changes

• One point of reference. A real plan gives the whole project something to stay accountable to as construction moves forward, instead of decisions getting made ad hoc on-site.
• Hardscape and planting decided together. When the patio and the beds around it are planned in the same conversation, they end up working together instead of one being an afterthought.
• Room to phase. A documented plan means a larger vision can be built in stages — this year’s patio, next year’s retaining wall — without losing the thread or ending up with mismatched materials down the line.
